As I take a stroll along my mental files my intellect is almost flooded in thougts. Among these thoughts is a vivid memory of the day my father left us in the country – side. My story emanates from this unforgettable incident which I have to tell you.
It was on 12 January midnight when my father left us there at our dilapidated hut in Binga. He had left with another woman and leaving us behind without food, clothes and a decent home. He left my mother a gentle, soft spoken and humble lady who never raised her voice. I was still a toddler by then and stood in akimbo watching the drama between my parents. My little sister Charmaine had gone to her blankets. My father never minded our tattered clothes, what we ate, where we slept and how our withered mother worked tirelessly to feed us although it was from hand to mouth.
We lived a painful life working on the fields for others only to get a few cents. We also cleaned toilets for others. I still remember being sent back home from school because had not yet been paid.
Up until that day I realized that life is a journey .It was on twelve o’clock midnight when I was driving in my Mercedes Benz from work. Out of the blue a man stopped in front of my car begging for money and mercy .I got out of my car and he mumbled some words and that’s when I came to realize that the man was none other than my father. He was looking derseted, thin and shaggy. His hair was dirty, uncombed and long. In addition his cracked exposed feet were bleeding sympathetically. I looked at him up and down regarding the pain regret and misery in his sunken eyes.
With all he had done to our family I ran with great vigour to him and embraced him tightly. I went with him to our house where he was surprised seeing a big furnished house. The next day I went with him to a shop and bought him some clothes to wear. Afterwards we went to a hotel and enjoyed ourselves as a family.
It is at this point in time I would like to tell you that a father is always a father regardless of his ability, unfaithfulness or recklessness ,whether light or dark rich or poor and selfish or kind.
