Clutching her battered suitcase she got off board and watched the old bus as it disappeared into the dust. Everything looked blurry as her head was reeling under the bombardment of troublesome thoughts. Indeed she had escaped such a strapping situation but little did she know of the impending doom that awaited her way.
Owing all thanks to the bus driver Matembo tragged down the dusty road. In her mind the escape from the carnivorous looking creatures that were roaming along Samora Machael Avenue which had imposed an attack on her during the early hours of that evening, seemed to have been a long lasting memory printed on her heart like a tattoo. Indeed she had escaped but that fierce attack left her with a fearful apprehension.
It was on a Friday the 13th a well known Halloween celebrated haunted night. Matembo had just got off the bus and had to pick it up from the bus stop to her house which was two kilometres away. It was getting dark and she decided to take the deserted path which seemed to be a shortcut to her house .The sky was impregnated with some dark heavy cumulonimbus clouds which promised to pour in any minute. The moon had disappeared the previous week so had the twilight. Matembo fumbled for her torch, only to discover that her battery had died. She mumbled to herself and started picking heavy steps with her wobbly boots.
The streets were vacant. There seemed to be no life. The absence of radios, people’s talk and chipping birds made it look like a world apart as if nature itself had frozen. Matembo was half blinded by a bright light which seemed to be of a heavy vehicle .Indeed as it approached it was a big white landrover with dark tinted windows. The car stopped at the far end of the road and the driver called out for Matembo. With her absent mind of getting home to meet her toddler who she had left in the hands of the bigger
brother who happened to be in elementary school she did not take heed of the call. The landrover driver reversed the car and started following Matembo. As soon as she looked back the young woman was gripped with fear and she started picking heavy steps.
Soon the vehicle was just behind her oscipit with the driver calling for her to stop and bring the suitcase or else they were going to sacrifice her life to the Halloween spirits. A pounding started in her ears as if her blood pressure had shot above normal.Matembo quickly took to her heels; it was as if her adrenalin had been poured in excess. The landrover driver kept shouting for Matembo to drop the suitcase. The fear of losing her life to those monsters made her feel the suspension of every bone of her slim fragile body, but she could have just dropped the suitcase and ran away again the fear of losing her job and picturing herself and the kids on the street enveloped her mind. Indeed she was in the middle of a dilemma .The feeling of having given the task of carrying those important business contracts in the suitcase to someone else echoed in her heart; she was now in a quandary. She felt as if molten magma had been churned into her stomach.
Immediately she spotted a bright glowing light behind a bush. That must have been a house she thought to herself. Matembo ran through the bushes but the attackers could not give up the fight at no cost. She banged through the door without even knocking and ran over a table of the celebrating
family. The Gilsons were astounded by the sudden night visitor. Matembo’s tongue went numb and she only pointed outside with her trembling fingers.
Immediately the young Gilsons warriors ran out armed with knives, but on seeing the approaching defenders the landrover disappeared into the dark. Matembo could not hide the fear in her eyes and her face had turned grey with terror. With such a situation at hand the Gilsons had no choice but to offer Matembo a place for the night. After narrating her story about all her
misfortunes she had encountered within twenty four hours everyone could agree that indeed she was the shadow woman
