Being an entrepreneur is no easy walk in the park. The freedom of being your own boss is usually the enticing factor but few people are able to handle the pressure that comes with it. Very few people can manage the load. Add family life and economic situation on top, the load becomes unbearable. If you don’t get help, its either you throw in the towel or sink under. Imagine the relationships you drop as you spend more time chasing your dream. The disappointments, workload and bills. You will end up stressed and depressed.
Nonetheless, stress and depression can be avoided if it is detected early. It will always remain a myth that its a white man’s disease. Anyone is prone to it hence the earlier it is identified and treated, the lesser the repercussions. Cases of suicides and mental illness are rising daily so everyone should join in this fight. Seeking professional treatment is good but as always, prevention is better than cure. So tackling issues around stress, depression and mental help should be a priority for every entrepreneur and their families.
So how do I know that I’m depressed? This is the most frequently asked question I encounter. These symptoms really show that something is wrong with you. Persistent feeling of sadness, loss of interest in favorite things, loss of appetite, low energy levels, loss of concentration, low self-esteem, thoughts of suicide, mood swings, anxiety, apathy, guilt, general discontent, hopelessness, agitation, excessive crying, irritability, restlessness, social isolation, early awakening, insomnia, restless sleep, excess sleepiness, excessive hunger, fatigue, slowness, inactivity, weight gain, weight loss and repeatedly going over thoughts.
Isolation is a major trigger of depression. That loneliness will make you feel like you are alone in the world. Fear of the unknown and the future begin to cloud your reasoning. Eish, the whole world feels like it’s on your shoulders. Shake it off!! There are life and light. Your future is very bright before you and your Maker is willing to take you to your destiny. There are ways to shake this monster off so that you pursue your purpose. It all starts with realizing that your mental health is very important. Develop yourself in that area and invest in your mental wellness.
