Yesterday night, I corrected a lady on my contact for posting an update that reads thus “Anything you do that does not make you money is nonsense”. That is a very wrong and misleading quote but I am sure that many youths have their lives controlled by it.
For a youth whose age falls between 16 and 35 to believe that money is the most important thing is miseducation. If you are a youth and you believe that anything that does not make you money is nonsense, much so that all you do is chase after money and will not do anything except it brings immediate cash. Except you make the money doing what you have a passion for, it is safe to say that you are wasting your most resourceful age.
It is understandable that in this third world country, a lot of young people have been saddled with duties that require them to always chase after money, but it is an unwise decision to allow any form of duty to prevent you from living your life in your way.
I learned this early when I got to Lagos. Months after relocating to Lagos from Kogi State, my uncle with whom I stayed got me a job in a bank – as a secondary school graduate, I was going to be earning above N25, 000. 00. That was a lot of money then, but I left the job after two weeks and returned to the one that paid me only N6, 000. 00 monthly.
That decision infuriated a lot of my family members – they felt I was lazy and many of them never change that opinion to date. However, back of my decision was the strong desire to do what I had a passion for. I still follow that pattern. It was also what made me dump the University education when I did.
It is now becoming clear to me that the decisions made to develop and work with my passion were the best decisions I have made. I do not feel bad that I do not have money in my bank account or whenever I run out of cash, despite I am above 30 years old for I know that my best asset now is not money.
I know that by doing what I have passion for in the way I should, and not giving up on it, the money will soon come after me no matter how long it may take. So I enjoy my life whether I have money or not. If anything will get me depressed, it is never because I am broke.
Many people are younger than me and constantly slip into depression when they do not have money. Hey, buddy, what is wrong with your life? Your most important asset as a youth is not money – it is your energy; your intelligence, passion, and presence.
If you think that your life is miserable because you do not have money, your life truly pathetically miserable, but it is because you think money is your most important asset, not because you do not have it. Be reeducated!
Make the most of your energy and money will come after you. You owe nobody money, do not bury your passion to chase after money. Life is to be enjoyed, not endured!
