Last year I did a post on how to have a mind barrier and I drew an analogy using how the brain protects itself from toxic substances. There’s a thin layer of cells between the blood system of the brain and the blood system of the rest of the body that keeps out toxins and prevents the brain from easily getting damaged.
This layer is called the blood-brain barrier. This means that the blood in your brain (and spinal cord) has different contents than the blood in the rest of your body. This barrier is protective. For example, if you were to inject poison into the bloodstream, it would affect all tissues except for the brain and the spinal cord. It will only get to the brain and spinal cord if it’s very acidic. The blood-brain barrier prevents a lot of substance from passing through the bloodstream directly into the brain.
For example, In order for cigarettes to have effects, nicotine needs to pass through the blood-brain barrier. Most cigarette companies add Ammonia to tobacco to increase the acidity of the cigarettes because a higher acidity allows nicotine to cross this barrier easily. Just like your brain, you should also have a barrier in place that helps you block out negative criticisms and stupid derogatory remarks from people. People are insane.
People are terrible, neglect this at your own peril. When I say this people often think I am being pessimistic, but I am not. Lots of people are psychopaths, it’s just a few things that are keeping them sane. One of the worst things you can do to yourself is to be naively optimistic about everybody you come across. A lot of people have lost their moral compass in one way or the other; they don’t know the difference between good and evil, for them anything goes.
Some people’s level of relativism is so extreme that they don’t believe in absolutes. For the truth, good or evil is extremely subjective and relative. For some people, the level of cortisol and adrenaline (stress hormones) that permeates their body system is so high that it constantly suppresses the release of hormones that regulates sympathy, hence they don’t have a conscience.
That’s why you need to have a high level of self-esteem, confidence, and self-efficacy. Be ruggedly individualistic. Or else you will constantly be mentally stressed out by the actions of others. There’s a quote by the French writer Nicholas Chamfort that made me clap the first time I read it. He said, ‘A man should swallow a frog every morning to be sure of not meeting with anything more extremely offensive in the day ahead.’I have my own frog I swallow every morning.
Whatever that frog is for you, swallow it every morning so you can face the world with boldness and confidence. Have a great weekend ahead.
